  National Updates  
  Lowest Road Toll in Over Forty Years  
  The 2006 Road Toll was the lowest in 46 years. 387 people died on the roads, 17 fewer than in 2005 and the lowest yearly road toll since 1960. Preliminary analysis shows that excessive speed and drink driving were the two biggest factors. For more information go to LTNZ or the NZ Police.

  Maori drownings in decline  
  Fewer Maori have drowned this year, according to figures just released by Water Safety New Zealand. An encouraging sign, maybe the messages are getting through. Click here for more information

  Safekids New Zealand Photo Competition  
  The competition will run through the month of March 2007 and will involve children, as part of a classroom project, photographing both a safe and unsafe scenario in their community, home or school. IPLit database of injury prevention resources is now online, click here for this bibliographic database of articles, research reports and more focusing on research most relevant to the Aotearoa / New Zealand setting.

INZED, the Injury NZ e-Directory is now online, click here for a who's who of injury control and prevention in New Zealand. If your name is not listed and you are part of the New Zealand injury prevention workforce, follow the link on the website to complete the contacts information form.

  IPNANZ Membership directory search  
  IPNANZ members can now search the membership directory for the whereabouts of members in different regions and also through a list of specialist areas. For example you can search for all members in the Hawke's Bay. You can search for all members with skills in water safety or child safety. You can also search for a combination e.g. all members in Hawke's Bay who have skills in water safety. Have a go at www.ipn.org.nz

  Gerard Vaughan has been appointed as ALAC's new Chief Executive Officer. He will take up the position on February 12th 2007. Gerard takes over the role from Dr Mike MacAvoy who has moved on to head Drinkwise in Australia after 12 years at ALAC.

  Jacqui Fill, Strategic Advisor, Safe Community Foundation New Zealand has left to pursue personal interests. Jacqui has worked in the injury prevention sector both at SCFNZ and the IPRC for a number of years. We wish Jacqui well for her future.

  Safe Community Programme Manager appointed in New Plymouth  
 

New Plymouth injury Safe (NPiS) is delighted to announce the appointment of Channa Perry to the role of Programme Manager for New Plymouth's WHO safe community programme.

Channa joined the NPiS team on 29 January and brings a wealth of experience in working for a range of primary care and NGOs in England, both at a strategic level and in community development and health promotion. Channa recently completed her MSc in Public Health and has previously led the development of the Health of Older People Strategy at Taranaki District Health Board. Injury prevention and mental health promotion (suicide prevention) are the two areas of public health that have most inspired Channa and she's looking forward to the opportunity to develop new networks and partnerships that will increase community participation in the safe community programme.

  Gill Myers, Team Administrator, for the NZIPS Secretariat has left to take up a role as a Personal Assistant at NZ Trade and Enterprise. Gill had been with the team for almost 3 years and her contribution is very much appreciated. We wish Gill well for the future.

  NZ Injury Control Bulletin  
  After several years as editor of the ICB, Helen Borne has accepted a new role with the University of Auckland as a Campaigns Communications Manager. Helen has been an excellent editor of the bulletin and has also contributed her time and skills to the IP News which has been much appreciated. Katrina Lawson, from the IPRC, has been appointed as the new editor. Katrina has experience in journalistic writing, editing and production and is looking forward to taking up the role of ICB editor.   Foundation Certificate Courses 2007 - 15-18 May & 31 July - 3 August 2007  
  This year IPNANZ will deliver two four-day courses of the Foundation Certificate in Injury Prevention - Te Aho Tapu. The course is NZQA accredited and has been designed for those who are new to injury prevention. The first course is on 15 - 18 May and will be held in Hamilton. The second course will be in Auckland 31 July - 3 August.   New opportunity to gain the Foundation Certificate in Injury Prevention - Te Aho Tapu through extramural study  
  IPNANZ is now able to offer a golden opportunity to those who attended one of the two-day IPNANZ workshops on Injury Prevention before 2005. You may now undertake personal study for the Certificate with guidance from a mentor/assessor for a fee of $350. This option is only available until the end of June 2007 so if you are interested please contact Isabel Bird, IPNANZ Workforce Development Coordinator, as soon as possible i.bird@ipn.org.nz
