Welcome to the 6th Edition of IP News.

Well, winter has arrived and with that comes further opportunities to get clued up on ways to prevent injuries. We have a great selection of news, events and happenings to keep you up to date. There are also a number of awards for you to nominate people, initiatives or groups that have made a positive impact on our quest to create a safe New Zealand.

A big congratulations to all those who were placed in the NZ Workplace Health & Safety Awards 2007 and Road Safety Awards 2006.

Also, congratulations to Plunket who has not only recently celebrated its centenary, but also won the Road Safety Awards general and premier awards for their Car Seat Rental Scheme.

  Winners Announced: NZ Workplace Health & Safety Awards 2007  
  The awards, organised by the health and safety magazine Safeguard and supported by the Department of Labour, were presented at a gala dinner on Tuesday 1st May. The big winner was Tokoroa-based cable logging crew, Ribbonwood Yarding Systems- Congratulations!   Plunket Conference Success  
  Plunket celebrated it's 100th Anniversary with a conference held in Dunedin. Dr Martin R. Eichelberger, renowned expert in paediatric trauma care and injury control and Chairman of Safekids Worldwide was a guest speaker at the conference. Of particular note was the impressive statistic that Safekids Worldwide has contributed to a nearly 40 percent decline in the child death rate from accidental injuries since its inception in 1988.   Road Safety Awards 2006  
  Winners of the Road Safety Innovation and Achievement Awards were announced by Hon Harry Duynhoven at Parliament's Grand Hall, 22 May 2007. Congrats to Plunket for winning the general and the premier award for their Car Seat Rental Campaign.

  Older People Safest Group in Our Community  
  The Ministry of Justice NZ Crime and Safety Survey 2006 has found that people aged 60-plus are the least likely to experience crime in NZ. Go to ageconcern for the full report.

  Preschool Drowning Issue Still Remains  
  Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) has released drowning statistics for April 2007. There were eight drownings in New Zealand, the highest April total since 2002. Three drownings were recreational including the tragic deaths of two children when their family boat sank. Five drownings were non-recreational including two 11 month old children in separate home swimming pool incidents.

  New Unsafe Goods Notice for Hot Water Bottles  
  The Minister of Consumer Affairs has declared under the provisions of s31 of the Fair Trading Act 1986 a new unsafe goods notice for hot water bottles. The Unsafe Goods (Hot Water Bottles) Notice 2007 is effective from 25 May 2007 and requires hot water bottles supplied in New Zealand to comply with the British Standard for hot water bottles. This new unsafe goods notice replaces the Unsafe Goods Notice (Rubber Hot Water Bottles) 2006 and incorporates several new requirements.   Plunket to Advocate for Restraints Beyond Five Years  
  A remit to the Plunket conference proposed by Auckland City Area Society was unanimously passed by the delegates. The remit stated "That the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society (Inc) advocate for legislation to ensure the use of an appropriate child restraint beyond a child's fifth birthday'.

The Plunket Society will work with other agencies pushing for a legislative change to require child restraint use beyond the fifth birthday. For more information contact; sue.campbell@plunket.org.nz

  North Shore City holds it site visit on the 25th June and anticipated that the designation ceremony will take place on the 24th July 2007.   Feet First - Walk to School Week - Top Prize to Nelson  
  Hamish Carter and Debbie Tanner helped Nelson's Brightwater School celebrate the highest participation rates in the country during the Feet First Walk to School week. Planned to be an annual event in March of each year, for more information go to their website.

  Revision of Child Restraint Sysems  
  A revision of AS/NZS 1754:2004 Child restraint systems for use in motor vehicles has been released for public comment. The closing date for comment is 19 July 2007.

This draft contains several key changes and revisions on which comment is invited. Major changes include requirements for booster seats - Type F, removal of booster cushions (backless boosters), and guidance on seat requirements with respect to a child's age.

The NZIPS Secretariat are pleased to announce two new members to the team - Diana Pedlow and Dee Young.

Diana brings an in-depth background in injury prevention from both an operations background and programme design and management. She will be managing both the falls and drowning portfolios of the NZIPS Secretariat. Diana can be contacted on 04 918 4189.

Dee's background includes communications and event management in the public and private sectors, policy analyst and since 2002, project co-ordination and programme management in ACC. Dee will manage the suicide and assault areas. Dee can be contacted on 04 918 7189.
