Welcome to the 7th Edition of IP News.

We are pleased to have been bringing you IP News for a year now and hope you find it informative. We would welcome your feedback - see the link attached and don't forget to tell your friends and colleagues about it. Our subscriptions are growing with a huge increase in distribution for the June edition!

In this edition we feature the launch of the NZ Injury Prevention Programmes Database which went live on 25 July 2007. Much work has gone into the development of this database and the team are very hopeful that it will become a useful tool.

Don't forget that entries for the NZ Community Safety & Injury Prevention Awards 2007 close on 8 August. The IP News editorial panel would also like to congratulate North Shore City on becoming the 116th International Safe Community- well done!

  National Updates  
  NZ Injury Prevention Programmes Database - LIVE  
  The NZIPS Secretariat are thrilled to announce that the online database of Injury Prevention Programmes went live in July. It can be accessed through the NZIPS website, www.nzips.govt.nz. Currently, the database has around 300 injury prevention initiative entries. The Secretariat is hoping to double this number with the database becoming more and more effective as a greater proportion of the current programmes operating in New Zealand are entered.

  New Zealand Community Safety & Injury Prevention Awards 2007

  Community Internship Programme  
  The Community Internship Programme is a skill-sharing and capacity building scheme through the Local Government and Community Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs. It provides grants for placing experienced and skilled people from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors on short or medium term internships with host community organisations.   NZ Children Now Safe from Caustic Dishwashing Powders  
 

New Zealand homes just became safer for young children as dangerous highly caustic dishwashing powder formulations were forced off supermarket shelves from 1 July 2007.   Rail Safety Week  
  Rail Safety week ran from 23-29 July 2007 with advertising and other activities concentrating on the needs for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists to take extreme care when entering or crossing the rail network. Go to ltsa.govt.nz for more information.

  Suicide - Postvention Response Fund  
 

The Ministry of Health has a small budget to assist communities after there has been a suicide. The purpose of this Postvention Response Fund is to provide some financial support for postvention activities in communities where a response is needed to reduce the potential for further suicidal behavior.   Burns - A Moment of Carelessness, A Lifetime of Treatment  
  The Injury Prevention Network of Aotearoa New Zealand is issuing a winter burns warning.
National Manager, Val Norton, says, "Every year, around one percent of New Zealanders get burned. That's 41,000 people according to latest population estimates. Ten percent of burn victims will require hospitalisation, and 10 percent of those will either die, or come close to it. That's more than one a day." The full release is available online here

  North Shore City Designation Ceremony  
 

At a celebration ceremony on 24th July, 2007, North Shore City became the 116th International Safe Community and the 6th Territorial Local Authority in New Zealand to achieve this status. At the ceremony Teresa Stanley, Chairperson for ShoreSafe stated "what we have achieved so far is good, but by the time we are applying for redesignation I want us to be great".   Northland People Warned of Increased Fire Danger  
  Homes stricken by flooding in Northland could be exposed to greater fire danger, warned the New Zealand Fire Service. People had to use alternative means of heating, cooking and lighting as a result of power cuts and needed to be even more vigilant about fire safety. The full release is available online here.

David Campbell has left his position of Programme Manager at ACC. David was involved with the completion of the falls strategy and focused on the writing and driving of the implementation plan. David and his wife and family have relocated to the Hawkes Bay to work as a physiotherapist.

SPINZ kaupapa, or main purpose, is to provide best practice information on suicide prevention that supports effective intervention and prevention activities for communities and services across Aotearoa-New Zealand.   Safety NZ Week, 3-9 September 2007, Nationwide  
  This year the week will set the scene for the beginning of a three year safety communication strategy. The emphasis of Safety Week will be around the NZ Community Safety and Injury Prevention Awards which are being held in Wellington on 6 September and we'll be promoting the best of 2006 - 2007 safety initiatives. The awards ceremony will be jointly hosted by ACC Chief Executive, Dr Jan White, and Director of the Safe Communities Foundation NZ, Dr Carolyn Coggan, and will be presented by the Minister for ACC, the Hon Ruth Dyson. The existing website will be updated during the lead up to the 2006/2007 awards.
