  Strategies Update  
  Review of NZIPS Strategy  
 

The NZIPS Secretariat is currently leading a review of the New Zealand Injury Prevention Strategy which was first launched in 2003. This is the first five year review of the Strategy and will help assess progress against the Strategy's objectives and goals and to identify recommendations for change to improve the effectiveness of the Strategy. As part of the consultation process, the NZIPS Secretariat will be holding a series of workshops in selected regions across the country. If you are planning a regional meeting/workshop between July and September which the NZIPS team could participate in, please email them with information.

Lesley Bromwich recently joined ACC in Counties Manukau as an Injury Prevention Consultant.

Chris Dent has joined ACC as an Injury Prevention Consultant in Henderson.

John Wren, Programme Leader, IP Research, has been seconded to the NZIPS Team for 12 months to assist with research projects and five year review of the Strategy.

  Call for Abstracts - open until 29 June 2009
Registrations are now open for the 2-day symposium being held in Wellington by Suicide Prevention Information New Zealand (SPINZ). Held to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day, the symposium theme has been chosen in the context of increasing concern about suicide rates among Mâori, which have declined but not matched a trend of decreases in the general population.

  Costs of Harmful Alcohol and Other Drug Use  
 

The economic analysis by Business and Economic Research Limited (BERL) estimates the costs to society and government of harmful use of alcohol, illegal drugs and misused legal drugs. It does not include the costs of tobacco use.

The report also estimates the potential level of costs that are avoidable, and the social costs that arise from injuries that result from alcohol and other drug use. The report was commissioned by the Ministry of Health and Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) to provide up-to-date cost estimates to inform policy development.
